Nothing But Nonsense Day

Have the social implications of broccoli transit got you down? Are the chances of a random object being a scone being one in six too low probability for you? Do you feel that brick is too soggy? Do you enjoy fourier transforms? How about those taken of cats? Have you ever fashioned a trebuchet out of string and literary deconstruction? Then the Summer Reading Program show, Nothing But Nonsense Day, is for you. Come to the library at 2pm tomorrow, Wednesday, July 30. With nonsense rhymes, silly jokes and riddles, and the Musicians of Bremen puppet play. Come to the library and enjoy the show. So, in the words of Ernest Hemingway, "Buy a lot of RAM."

Fooling Around With Foolish Food

Come to the library on Wednesday, July 23rd at 2pm for the latest Summer Reading Program show, "Fooling Around With Foolish Food." There will be food stories, food puppet shows, food jokes, and even more food fun. Review - The Pigeon Has Feelings Too!

The Pigeon Has Feelings Too! by Mo Willems is a very funny story about the Pigeon and more of his rapport with the Bus Driver. It is a short, easy to read board book designed for young readers, but it is just as funny for the older readers as well. The author clearly had both the children and the parents in mind when he wrote this story. I cannot recommend this book enough, and it is most definitely worth your time to read it. (It being a board book, it shouldn't take too much time anyway.) You can borrow this book, and many others at the Swift Current Public Library.

Review - The Curious Case of the Misplaced Modifier

Bonnie Trenga's book, The Curious Case of the Misplaced Modifier is a fun and interesting book about grammar and sentence structure. Do not be deterred by the subject of the book. The book uses the format of mystery stories to explain the usually dry subject of grammar. If you are interested in her writing, Bonnie Trenga has also done some guest writing in the popular grammar podcast Grammar Girl's Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing. Also, you can view her blog at sentencesleuth.blogspot.com. This is a very fun book, and has some very useful tips for anyone. While this book is not in the Swift Current Library, I borrowed it through interlibrary loan from the Vancouver Public Library. If there is a book you cannot find in our library, we will order it for you from any other library. It is a service that makes the accessibility of information nearly limitless.

Review - Asterix in Corsica

Asterix in Corsica is one of Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo's Asterix series of graphic novels. In this story, Asterix and Obelix happen upon a Corsican prisoner who has escaped from the Romans. They return to Corsica, where family feuds and Roman encampments cause much conflict, and many laughs. This is a very funny book, and I recommend it to anyone. The entire Asterix series is excellent, and Asterix in Corsica is no exception to this rule. And remember, you can borrow this book and many others at Swift Current Public Library.

Storytime

Every Tuesday in the month of July, the library is offering storytime from 2 - 2:45 pm. There will be funny stories for ages 3-5 with parents or caregivers, and the best part is it is completely Free.

Review - The Sneetches and Other Stories

The Sneetches and Other Stories is a great collection of four stories by Dr. Seuss. First is "The Sneetches," about the snobby Star-Belly Sneetches, and the way in which they resolve their differences with the Plain-Belly Sneetches. Second is "The Zax," the chronicle of the issues that come about when a South-Going Zax and a North-Going Zax meet. Third is "Too Many Daves," the story of Mrs. McCave, who had twenty-three sons and named them all Dave. Finally, my personal favourite, "What Was I Scared Of?" the spooky story of the Pale Green Pants With Nobody inside. I'd suggest you be careful when you pick snide. This collection of stories is great, and I recommend it highly. Be sure to add it to your Summer Reading list.
