Dumpling Bazaar

Be sure to come to the Swift Current Library Dumpling Bazaar on September 9, from 2-3:30pm. Hear dumpling stories from around the world, and try many different kinds of dumplings. Review - The Baabaasheep Quartet

The Baabaasheep Quartet by Leslie Elizabeth Watts is a wonderful story about four friends who retire to the city, form a quartet, and win a singing contest. These friends are sheep, and everyone knows that sheep sing beautifully. This book was a 2006 Shining Willow Award nominee. It was my personal favourite of the nominees, though it was not the winner. The library even put on a performance where four members of the Swift Current Chamber Singers came and acted out the story, finishing off the performance by singing some Barbershop Quartet repertoire. This book has the right balance of a moral message and a fun story, and I'd recommend it to anyone. Remember, you can borrow this book, and many others at Swift Current Public Library.

Be sure to keep reading and bringing in your reading logs until August 20th to be entered in the draws. Also, be sure to keep reading for the rest of your life, because it activates your prefrontal cortex, and therefore, keeps your brain in shape.

Watching Eye Magic Show - Roger Boucher

Make sure you don't miss the final show of the 2008 Summer Reading Program, "Watching Eye Magic Show" with Roger Boucher. Wednesday August 13, at 2pm. His illusions will shock and amaze, and it's sure to be a magical experience. Even after this final show, be sure to keep reading, and bringing in your completed reading logs, as we will still accept them until August 20th, and you will get more entries into the draw for prizes.

Because of the upcoming Stat Holiday, there will be no Summer Reading Program show on August 6. That does not mean you can't come to the library, but we will not be having a show. Take this time to go home with your families, and reflect on the true meaning of Civic Holiday.

Nothing But Nonsense Day

Have the social implications of broccoli transit got you down? Are the chances of a random object being a scone being one in six too low probability for you? Do you feel that brick is too soggy? Do you enjoy fourier transforms? How about those taken of cats? Have you ever fashioned a trebuchet out of string and literary deconstruction? Then the Summer Reading Program show, Nothing But Nonsense Day, is for you. Come to the library at 2pm tomorrow, Wednesday, July 30. With nonsense rhymes, silly jokes and riddles, and the Musicians of Bremen puppet play. Come to the library and enjoy the show. So, in the words of Ernest Hemingway, "Buy a lot of RAM."

Fooling Around With Foolish Food

Come to the library on Wednesday, July 23rd at 2pm for the latest Summer Reading Program show, "Fooling Around With Foolish Food." There will be food stories, food puppet shows, food jokes, and even more food fun. Bring your appetite for humour, and stay tuned to this blog for more information about the 2008 Summer Reading Program.

Review - The Pigeon Has Feelings Too!

The Pigeon Has Feelings Too! by Mo Willems is a very funny story about the Pigeon and more of his rapport with the Bus Driver. It is a short, easy to read board book designed for young readers, but it is just as funny for the older readers as well. The author clearly had both the children and the parents in mind when he wrote this story. I cannot recommend this book enough, and it is most definitely worth your time to read it. (It being a board book, it shouldn't take too much time anyway.) You can borrow this book, and many others at the Swift Current Public Library.

Review - The Curious Case of the Misplaced Modifier

Bonnie Trenga's book, The Curious Case of the Misplaced Modifier is a fun and interesting book about grammar and sentence structure. Do not be deterred by the subject of the book. The book uses the format of mystery stories to explain the usually dry subject of grammar. If you are interested in her writing, Bonnie Trenga has also done some guest writing in the popular grammar podcast Grammar Girl's Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing. Also, you can view her blog at sentencesleuth.blogspot.com. This is a very fun book, and has some very useful tips for anyone. While this book is not in the Swift Current Library, I borrowed it through interlibrary loan from the Vancouver Public Library. If there is a book you cannot find in our library, we will order it for you from any other library. It is a service that makes the accessibility of information nearly limitless.

Review - Asterix in Corsica

Asterix in Corsica is one of Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo's Asterix series of graphic novels. In this story, Asterix and Obelix happen upon a Corsican prisoner who has escaped from the Romans. They return to Corsica, where family feuds and Roman encampments cause much conflict, and many laughs. This is a very funny book, and I recommend it to anyone. The entire Asterix series is excellent, and Asterix in Corsica is no exception to this rule. And remember, you can borrow this book and many others at Swift Current Public Library.

Storytime

Every Tuesday in the month of July, the library is offering storytime from 2 - 2:45 pm. There will be funny stories for ages 3-5 with parents or caregivers, and the best part is it is completely Free.

Review - The Sneetches and Other Stories

The Sneetches and Other Stories is a great collection of four stories by Dr. Seuss. First is "The Sneetches," about the snobby Star-Belly Sneetches, and the way in which they resolve their differences with the Plain-Belly Sneetches. Second is "The Zax," the chronicle of the issues that come about when a South-Going Zax and a North-Going Zax meet. Third is "Too Many Daves," the story of Mrs. McCave, who had twenty-three sons and named them all Dave. Finally, my personal favourite, "What Was I Scared Of?" the spooky story of the Pale Green Pants With Nobody inside. I'd suggest you be careful when you pick snide. This collection of stories is great, and I recommend it highly. Be sure to add it to your Summer Reading list. And remember, you can borrow this and many other books at the Swift Current Public Library.

Reviews - The Subtle Knife

Philip Pullman's Book The Subtle Knife (Book II of His Dark Materials) is an interesting story. Lyra Silvertongue has passed through into the world of Cittagazze, and comes into contact with Will Parry, a character from our world. Will does not have a Daemon, and so is very strange to Lyra at first, but as the story continues, they become inseparable. Will becomes the main focus of this particular story, after Lyra's emphasis in The Golden Compass. Will and Lyra move about between worlds and they learn about the powers of the Alethiometer and the Subtle Knife. The story moves along at a good pace, and has a nice balance of fun and serious aspects. It will keep you entertained for several hours. All in all, it is a good choice for a fun summer read. And remember, you can borrow this book and many others at the Swift Current Public Library. Disclaimer: This is the second book in this series. Be sure to read the first book, The Golden Compass before you attempt to read this book.
